Arriving at Koh Phangan at just after 1030am we hired a scooter for 1000thb for 5 days with Adam big bike which was around 5 minute walk from the pier. The process was good and there was no hassle returning it. We then drove to our accomdation. Jamaica inn bungalow. On the way the 2 of us, 2 large backpacks and 2 backpacks met a 20% gradient hill. It just made it to the top. The bungalow we had paid £12 a night and were disappointed to be met with another cold water shower.
We drove round to salad bay, the roads were really hilly beaches were nice though then we drove back round to Haad rin. Home of the full moon party there was already a lively vibe with buckets of alcohol as cheap as 150thb. We ate at Zeus, it was a burger joint if you needed that western fix. In the evening we went to chill up bar and played pool with the staff. The sleep was horrendous, this hotel was 2/10 for comfort. I booked to stay at salad beach resort for a night. To get a hot shower and a bit of luxury. The hotel was ok. It was so nice to have a hot shower. We spent the day snorkelling and chilling on the beach. The next day we booked 2 dives with Lotus diving to Sail Rock for 2250thb.
It was AMAZING the company were perfect the vis was perfect and during our safety stop on the first dive we saw a whale shark. After getting off the boat the heavens opened. It rained like crazy.
The next day the weather was still moody, we chilled in the hotel most of the day getting ready for the full moon party. We got to the party early around 7pm meaning we skipped the 100thb entry fee. The beach was already lively with buckets of alcohol for sale from 150thb with Thai vodka to 350thb for Smirnoff for 180ml bottle with mixers. The full moon rose out the sea a deep shade of red and shone over the beach all night. By midnight the beach was packed. We left around 2am and managed to get a taxi back easily. The next day we chilled at the hotel and had a near miss on the scooter when a taxi cut in front then came across sideways. Brushing my friends arm it was a miracle we didn’t fall off. Driving in Koh Phangan was the worst I had seen in Thailand so far. The hills combined with the local drivers. It’s fair to say ensure you have a bike with power.
Our ferry departed for Koh Samui at midday. Overall I didn’t really rate Koh Phangan. The restaurant choice was limited and the people were not as friendly as the rest of Thailand. Diving Sail Rock was an epic experience as was the full moon party. Apart from that I was ready to move on.
